Volume I: Bittered Sling Bistro
This project is several months in the making. It started off as a ghost of an idea back when I met up with Lauren Mote in January. It is unclear what we were discussing at that moment, but it had something to do with compiling all of the photographs I have taken of Bittered Sling Bistro over the years and putting them all together in some sort of book highlighting the evolution of the program.
The ideas started to really crystallize around March or April, when Lauren met up with Alison and myself to discuss the potential for a Bittered Sling publication. It was difficult to picture the overall look of the publication without the copy, but Alison and I proceeded with what we always do when envisioning a project - we make mood boards, have a thorough look at our growing library of cookbooks, design books, and magazines, and bookmarking pages of relevance, inspiration, and interest.
Alison and I wanted to combine their love for the West Coast and their vast knowledge of flavours and quality ingredients with Lauren Mote's fascination with the Art Deco and Art Nouveau periods so evident in their current packaging and branding... ... ... and then visually present all of that in a modern, colourful, and playful "Page and Paper" manner.
Below are some of the visual outtakes, process shots, and just some of the pages inside the 28-page full-colour booklet. This is the very first project where we have overseen all of the concept work, styling, art direction, photography, and book design - a literal start-to-finish-process with the very open-minded, fun, and amazingly talented husband-and-wife team, Lauren Mote and Jonathan Chovancek.
You can now purchase these booklets! Contact email@example.com for more details on where to purchase them. They will be available in select cities across North America and only a limited number of booklets have been produced. These booklets are chock full of cocktail recipes and culinary recipes using Bittered Sling bitters.
Our most heartfelt thanks go to the people who helped make this project possible... and to Lauren and Jonathan for entrusting us with the freedom to make this booklet into what it is now. Here's to many more of these down the road. :-)
